BHUBANESWAR: Diwali is an occasion of celebration for all irrespective of any aspect of a person. Differently abled students also have every right to celebrate this occasion amid much gaiety. Keeping this in mind, Youth For Seva organised a diya making event at Satyabhama Devi College for hearing-impaired students.
These students were engaged in making diyas of mud, which are also eco-friendly. The programme titled ‘Paint Diya’ saw some beautiful diyas created by the differently abled students. Coordinator of Youth For Seva said that these diyas would be sold at the market by the organisation.
He also said that innumerable rows of diyas light up every nook and corner of India on the occasion of Diwali turning a no-moon night into a night brighter and more beautiful than a full-moon night. A burning earthen lamp kept in front of a residence is the symbol of this exhilarating festival.
“With the creation of these diyas, we are trying to make these children realise that the world is not an isolated place and they do have the choice of enjoying Diwali just like everybody else. By engaging them in creation of diyas, we are also developing their skill set which would help them in the future. The recent judgment of SC which puts a certain limitation on bursting of firecrackers is praiseworthy as it would benefit differently abled children,” he said.
He also said that bursting of crackers in any way is wastage of precious money as it could be used in other useful ways. We have asked the differently abled children not to burst firecrackers, he added.
Secretary, Satyabhama College Niroja Laxmi Mohapatra stated that these children need to improve their skills to move forward. Such events help them in this aspect. We organise such skill based training every year.
