Kandhamal: A woman lost her newborn girl and was struggling in the hospital bed Friday as the doctor in the hospital refused to treat her because she hailed from a COVID-19 containment zone.
The incident took place at Padanketa area in Daringbadi in Kandhamal district. The pregnant woman, identified as Jasmine Pradhan, was rushed to the Daringbadi hospital by family members as she complained of labour pain Friday night.
After reaching at the hospital, the family members called the doctor on duty to attend Jasmine. However, the doctor did not turn up fearing COVID-19 infection, alleged her family.
Without getting any medical assistance from doctors, Jasmine delivered a baby girl who died after her birth.
Jasmine’s mother Bhagyalata Mallick alleged, “The doctor asked to conduct COVID-19 test of my daughter as we are from a containment zone. Even after we produced the test reports, the doctor did not turn up to treat her. My daughter delivered a baby girl. However, baby died within 10-15 minutes of her birth due to lack of medical treatment.”
Neither the doctor nor the district health department has given any statement regarding the matter, sources added.
