Rourkela: A dreaded woman ultra of Saranda sub-zone committee of the Maoist outfit surrendered before the superintendent of police here Tuesday.
Nitu Bankira alias Nagi (27) is a resident of Tiliposh under Jareikela police limits in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand and a cadre of Saranda sub-zone platoon no-1, said additional superintendent of police Prasant Kumar Jena at a press meet held here Tuesday.
She worked in close association with Maoist leader Sandip, he added.
Nitu was inducted into the fold by Maoist leader Samarji alias Anmol, the chief of Saranda sub-zone committee, in 2005. She initially joined as a singer of the moving theatre group of the ultras where her job was to entertain the leaders and cook food for members of the outfit.
Later, Sandip handed her the charge of platoon no-1 after which she actively participated in major offensives carried out by Samarji and Sandip on the borders of Orissa and Jharkhand.
In a recent incident, a joint team of police, CRPF and SOG jawans raided a Maoist camp at Daldali (Asurakhol) hill under Chandiposh police limits where a fierce encounter took place between the jawans and ultras, November 11, 2015.
Two dreaded ultras – Madhusudan Tarkote and Sangram Gagrai – were killed in the encounter while Nitu managed to escape with fellow ultras leaders to Jharkhand. Later, the security forces seized four country made guns, three hand grenades, 284 live bullets, Maoist fatigues, air bags, solar lights, radios, medicines, umbrellas, pocket diaries and food stocks from the hideout.
Fed up with her life as a Maoist, Nitu left the outfit in February and married Suresh Bodra in Jharkhand the next month.
As of now, 56 Maoists have surrendered before the police between 2010 and April, 2016 while 19 of them have been able to receive government assistance, Jena said. PNN
