Bhubaneswar: Anti-corruption vigilance sleuths Friday arrested two persons for trying to bribe a policeman to get a clearance about the alleged involvement of their relative in a case related to possession of ganja.
The incident was reported from Koraput district where Kartika Ghatan and Iswar Ghatan, brother and uncle of Bisikesan Ghatan, an accused in trading cannabis, attempted to offer Rs 98,900 as bribe to a policeman.
They offered the amount to Chinteswar Munda, a sub-inspector of police posted at Sadar police station of Jeypore with a request not to take any legal action against Bisikesan, who was involved in a case for transporting ganja.
Munda along with other staff were checking vehicles on National Highway 26 near Ambaguda outpost Thursday during which they intercepted a vehicle driven by Bisikesan and detected 42.5 kg ganja in it.
Bisikeshan was booked on charge of possession and transportation of ganja. When the accused persons Kartika and Iswar came to know about it, they requested Munda, to release the vehicle and not to initiate any criminal case against Bisikesan. They also offered a bribe to him for the purpose.
Munda reported the matter to police and vigilance about the bribe offer.
When Munda was in the police station, the accused duo, Kartika and Iswar, came to Sadar police station, Jeypore and offered Rs 98,900 to him as bribe with a request to release the vehicle and not to initiate any legal action against Bisikesan.
Accordingly, a trap was laid by vigilance sleuths. Kartika and Iswar were caught by the vigilance sleuths of Koraput Division, while offering illegal gratification of Rs 98,900 to Munda.
