Today most of us use smartphones with Android or iOS operating system. If the phones are smart, why not let the device do some earning? Your smartphones can generate earning opportunities if used wisely. If half of the time spent on chatting or browsing apps like Whatsapp or Facebook is utilised on some money-making apps, it can bring in some bucks which can then be used to recharge your mobile and avail discount coupons of various online or offline shops among others.

There are apps that offer reward points and cashback when we use them for transferring or receiving money to/from banks. The list of apps is all over the Internet space, but one must learn how and why these apps are offering benefits.

Orissa POST chatted with some IT experts in the field of Android or iOS who shared the techniques through which smartphone users can earn just by installing some apps.

Binod Kumar Jena, working with TCS, Bangalore in the Android segment, said, “We monetise our website by advertising third-party products. Mobile apps also follow the same procedure to make money. They offer a good opportunity to app developers and site owners to monetise their traffic as the number of smartphone users is increasing rapidly in India.”

“It takes months to conceive the design of a mobile app, work on it and then launch it. An application connects the service providers directly with their loyal users resulting in stronger engagement with them. This process ensures massive business growth, but it is not as easy as we think. We have to know who our customer is and how or why he opts for our app instead of the competitors.”

He added, “In the case of websites, one can browse many sites without installing them on the PC whereas for mobiles, the process is different. Here one has to install the specific app if he or she wants to explore it. There is a concept called “cost per install” (CPI) in the advertising industry. One needs to learn about the execution of the concept.”

Mohapatra continued, “For example, if there are two apps A (say Amulyam) and B (Flipkart). App A runs a list of ads under CPI campaign that includes app B. When a user of app A clicks on the campaign and hits “install” for app B on their devices, the latter does attribution tracking – a way to check where the users of their app come from – and pays app A for every install that happens via app A. A portion of benefit ultimately goes into the pocket of the users.”

“The mobile app marketing industry is powered by several business models. There are a number of models to choose from upon launching an app’s advertising campaign. CPI is the most important one, and while on the surface the name makes it sound deceptively simple (pay-per-install means you pay when someone installs your app), there are other aspects to it. Sometimes you can get affected by spamming. Prior to installing any app from a site other than Playstore, one should install a registered antivirus in his smartphone or else you will end up paying a price,” he added.

About CPI campaign and its importance

Cost Per Install (CPI) is one of the many metrics by which people measure their advertising budget. The advertiser only pays the ad network once the app is installed instead of when the advertisement is viewed. This puts the onus on those networks to place the advertisements in places where conversion rates are high and to target the proper audience.

Besides CPI, others such as Cost Per Registration, Cost Per Payment, Cost Per Transaction, Cost Per in-app Purchase and finally Cost Per Subscription also help users make money.

When asked about the features of PhonePe and Google Pay, S Mahesh Kumar, senior programmer, Capgemini said, “After the central government’s emphasis on digital payment systems, a lot of payment apps have flooded cyberspace. For people who think about short-term profit per transaction, Google Pay (previously Tez) is the best option. As it was launched in an already-crowded market in India ruled by PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM among others, it had to adopt a different strategy. One of the techniques to build user base is to incentivise the users to keep them engaged and bring their friends in. We hardly see any TV commercials or big hoardings of these apps anywhere. So, the company adopted the strategy of CPI and pay per transaction to make it popular among youths. In the long run, they can make good profit by providing a payment getway service to various companies.”

CPM is best for app based games

CPM is more important than CPI if you are advertising in the app itself and not in an e-commerce product where one has to make regular transactions. So it’s a great way for games, especially if you set the pay-out to trigger upon a certain achievement in the game, which is far more indicative of user engagement than just downloading.

Which app is best for you

Sagar Sasmal, senior networking manager at TCS, said, “Now most Indians are losing interest in free talktime apps because they are already getting unlimited Internet and calling from various mobile companies. So, many opt for apps the earning from which can be directly transferred into bank accounts like Paytm, Google pay, Payzapp among others.”

“But one needs to be careful before using any money making app. It is not advisable to provide your real email id at the time of signup and always use unnamed email for verification purpose. Avoid sharing any personal information with such apps. If the app asks for too many permissions like location, gallery, screen overlay, then do not install it. Most of the recharge apps collect your personal information and sell it for money. You then begin receiving spam messages. So always take care of your privacy while providing any sensitive data while registering for any new app,” he added.
