Dasarathpur: In a shocking incident Thursday morning, an elderly man committed suicide by hanging himself and his wife consumed poison to end her life at Kotepur village of Nizampur panchayat under Mangalpur police limits in Jajpur district Thursday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Ghanashyam Khatua (70) and his wife Taramani Khatua (65).
The villagers woke up Thursday morning to the news that Ghanashaym was hanging from a banyan tree near his house. Even as some neighbours brought his body down, others rushed to his house only to find his wife lying unconscious.
They rushed the couple in critical condition to the Mangalpur Community Health Centre (CHC) and then Jajpur district headquarters hospital as their condition deteriorated.
The couple died there while undergoing treatment. Police reached the Jajpur DHH and send the bodies for post-mortem. They also launched a probe after registering two cases of unnatural death.
‘We are investigating as to ascertain what prompted the couple to take extreme measures. We are awaiting the post-mortem reports,” said a police officer.
