Phulbani: Police Friday arrested an excise sub inspector (SI) on a charge of extortion from a local in Sautikia village under Baliguda police limits in Kandhamal district. The accused was S Simanchal Rao, SI, Phulbani district excise department.
As per a complaint filed by the residents of the village with Baliguda police, Rao had barged into the house of a local, Surendra Kahar, December 12 night last year. Threatening to falsely implicate him in a drug trafficking case, the official extorted Rs 50,000 from him.
Irritated locals had detained an Excise team in the village for a few hours and later lodged a case with the police. The arrest was made after five months. The accused SI was forwarded to court Friday.
