Phulbani, May 27: Even as a day has not passed since a man pushed his pregnant wife from a running train in Rayagada for opposing him talking to another woman, an engineer working with Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL) in Angul district pushed his wife from a rooftop in an attempt to kill her for an alleged extra-marital affair.

The incident occurred May 19. However, a complaint in this regard was lodged May 26. Sadar police arrested the engineer and produced him in court Wednesday, said police station officer-in-charge Trupti Nayak. The accused was identified as Sunil Digal of Gaerbata under Sadar police station.

His wife Suprava Kanhar was critically injured and she is bed-ridden at her parental house in Dhipasahi in the district. Nayak said while Sunil was mechanical engineer, his wife Suprava was a civil engineer working in Berhampur Irrigation Department. They got married in 2010 after an affair.

The complaint mentioned that Suprava reached his husband’s quarter at Bhimtangi in Angul district May 15. While she was in the balcony May 19 night at around 10.30 pm, Sunil suddenly pushed her. She fell down and screamed for help while writhing in pain. But, Sunil did not even go to attend her.

Some of the neighbours, however, rushed her to a nearby health centre. On being informed, her parents reached the health centre and took her home. She sustained injuries in her chest and waist. After Suprava’s family lodged a complaint with the police May 26, the same day Sunil visited his in-laws’ house on the pretext of meeting his wife. However, Suprava’s family immediately informed the police, who reached the place and arrested him.

Earlier also, Sunil has attempted to kill her several times. Sunil had attempted to push her in front of a moving train near Berhampur station. However, she got a narrow escape. Later, the matter was solved amicably in presence of both the families.

When they were in Baliguda, Suprava’s in-laws had been torturing her for several reasons including dowry. Even though intention behind Sunil’s repeated attempts to murder his wife has not been ascertained yet, his extramarital affair with one of his school-friends was said to be the reason behind it. Suprava had been opposing Sunil’s repeated and long phone calls and meetings with his girl friend. Sunil had been planning to eliminate Suprava in order to marry the girl, the complaint added.

At the time of marriage, Suprava’s family had given all the items as dowry as per the demand of her in-laws. However, later, they again demanded a car and Rs 5 lakh as dowry. As Suprava’s family expressed their inability to arrange the amount, Sunil was upset, the complaint said further. He had been torturing Suprava mentally and physically.
