elationships are like a castle of cards that tumble at a minor shake. Bhubaneswar, like any other city, is also witnessing a rise in divorce rates and marriage break ups. In many cases people have reportedly committed suicide due to failure of relationships and minor quarrels.

The strong bond of love and affection is turning into a weak link in the progressive life module. The reason behind failure of relationships is not the absence of faith and desire. According to women of the state, love, faith, and care are the most important elements of a happy marriage.
According to them, today people are giving more importance to their careers but have forgotten the purpose of earning money. According to family court sources, the divorce rate in the state has doubled in the last five years. According to sources around 2,000 couples have filed petition for divorce in the state in the last eight months.
Kabita, a resident of Rourkela, believes being patient helps a lot. She says, “Our home life often feels chaotic and disorganised. It becomes a challenge to remain serene and patient. We are into seven years of our marriage and it’s doing good, as we both are patient with each other.”
She adds, “It is a challenge to raise children. Determined effort to spend time with our children and with family is keeping our relationship strong.”
While her husband Partho says, “We both are working. It is my responsibility too to take care of the household. I cannot say I am a man and I can escape the daily routine. Helping each other in growing kids and discussion makes our life smooth. We keep our professional lives away when with each other. We devote ourselves to each other when at home and keep our office work back in office.”
While Rupali believes that it is important for couples to spend some quality time together these days spending time is a real challenge but couples should have the opportunity to introspect things which are going wrong between them and can improve their marital lives.
“Often I and my husband in the evenings when the kids go to play just talk and spend time together. I am lucky our in-laws stay with me and they also take care of our kids. We ensure that every weekend we go out for movies or dinner. It’s just he and me. We spend some lovely time and talk whatever we wish to. We hear each other patiently and try to solve problems but our main focus is to keep smiling and keep our topics lighter,’ says Rupali.
She adds, “The weekend hours spent together reenergises us for the whole week. We have been following for the last three years of our marriage. Since we started following it we have started understanding each other better.”
According to psychiatrists marriage is all about how well you understand your partner. “The main reason marriages are breaking today is only due to ego issues. To keep a happy married life couples have to ensure that ego should never come in their relationship. Both have to support each other emotionally and sometimes learn to compromise,” Dr Nidhi Shrama, a psychiatrist, says.
