Jeypore, May 5: A farmer of Phampuni village under Jeypore block in Koraput district have threatened to commit suicide if the administration does not pay compensation to him for the loss of crops due to cyclonic storm ‘Hudhud’.
The farmer named Surendra Pradhan has apprised the district administration about his decision. He has also informed Jeypore MLA, sub-collector, district agriculture officer, local block development officer and tehsildar in written about his decision.
Pradhan has alleged that he cultivated crops on 10 acres of land. Out of this, two acres is owned by him. He cultivated crops on the rest eight acres on sharing basis. He had also borrowed `4 lakhs from some persons of the village for cultivating crops. However, due to the cyclonic storm ‘Hudhud’ in 2014, 50 per cent of crops cultivated by him got damaged. Moreover, sugarcane cultivated by him on 6 acres of land was also destroyed in a fire mishap January 20.
Pradhan said he is not in a condition to repay the loan due to damage of crops and therefore, suffering from depression for last few months. He further stated that he made a complaint to the collector April 8 and sought financial assistance for the loss of crops. But, it did not yield any result. Therefore, he has decided to end his life if the administration does not provide immediate assistance to him for the crop loss.
