Father beats mother to death; five children in dire straits in Keonjhar

Barbil: Parents quarrel led to the killing of mother that rendered five children in Keonjhar district in dire straits. The incident took place under the Barbil police limits’ Damu Hutting Monday.

According to police sources, a couple Kalia Gope and his wife Devaki had a tiff over family matters which turned worse and resulted in the wife’s death. With verbal spat taking a violent turn, Kalia in a fit of rage got hold of a plastic pipe and started beating up Devaki till she fell unconscious.

On being informed, Police rushed to the spot to find Devaki lying dead on ground. Barbail police station’s inspector-in-charge (IIC) Sushant Das informed that a scientific team from Keonjhar carried out an investigation and the post-mortem has been done. With the children having no one to look after, Police said that steps would be taken to rehabilitate them.

According to the deceased’s elder daughter, Rinu (12), had got her leg broken three years ago and since then she had stopped going to school.

Her younger sister Minu stays at her uncle’s house and pursues study there. Her three younger brothers — four-year-old Rabindra, three-year-old Badal and two-year-old Aakash — were staying at home with the couple.

“The quarrel between my parents has literally orphaned us. Now what would happen to us? Who will take care of us?” an inconsolable Rinu asked with tears rolling down her cheeks.
