Thakurmunda: The body of a female elephant was recovered at Benuadar jungle in Satkosia forest range under Karanjia forest division in Mayurbhanj district Monday.
The actual reason behind the animal’s death is yet to be ascertained. The pachyderm, aged within 15 to 20 years, is suspected to have died of illness before its treatment could be started, Forest officials said. The reason behind the animal’s death will be ascertained after a post-mortem of the carcass is conducted Tuesday, they said.
As per sources, locals noticed that the animal was unable to move and was standing at one place in Benuadar Sahi rural jungle in compartment no-19 near Bhaliadal panchayat and informed the Forest officials.

On being informed, Forest officials and veterinarians, led by ranger Rabindranath Mohanta started preparations to leave for the spot. However, they found the animal dead on their arrival at the spot.
