Helsinki/Berlin, August 18: Two people were killed and six injured in a stabbing spree in the Finnish city of Turku Friday. Police said they shot one suspect and arrested him, and have warned that several others could still be at large.
Turku police have asked the residents of the city to avoid visits to central Turku and said motive of the suspect or suspects was not immediately known. The attack took place in the heart of the port city in southwestern Finland, just after 3 pm (1300 GMT) in a bustling neighbourhood.
Police raised an emergency readiness alert nationwide, increasing security at airports and train stations. Menwhile, a report said a man was hacked to death in the western German city of Wuppertal.
Police in Germany said they were hunting for one or more assailant(s), but could not immediately provide more information about the circumstances of the attack.
Significantly, the incident happened a day after two attacks in Spain that left 14 people dead and many injured.
Spain toll goes up to 14
Barcelona: The death toll in a double attack in Spain rose to 14, emergency services said Friday, as the country reeled from two vehicle rampages that saw vehicles being driven into groups of pedestrians in Barcelona and Cambrils, another seaside town. The emergency services said a woman injured in the Cambrils attack has died, bringing the total toll in both attacks to 14. The Catalan police, meanwhile reported that it had arrested a fourth person in connection with the attacks in northeastern Spain.According to an IANS report, Spanish police Friday killed five people in Cambrils to prevent a second attempted van attack after an earlier one in Barcelona.
