Sonepur: The state government has announced that a fisheries college will be established in Subarnapur district.
The announcement was made Sunday in Bhubaneswar by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo.
Residents of Subarnapur have welcomed the decision, saying it will boost fisheries resources in the region and create employment opportunities.
Along with the college, a research centre is also being planned, which officials said would generate new government positions.

Students from the district will now be able to pursue fisheries studies locally, helping produce new fisheries scientists.
Fisherfolk, fish farmers, and entrepreneurs from Subarnapur and neighbouring districts are also expected to benefit from professional guidance and training.
Officials said the move will bring both direct and indirect employment to locals.
The district had no major central or state government institution until now.
Locals expressed happiness over the BJP government’s announcement, recalling that Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah had promised the establishment of a fisheries college during his election rally in Subarnapur.
After the BJP came to power in Odisha, people’s hopes for the institution grew.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited Subarnapur June 7 for the first time, when intellectuals and conscious citizens submitted a memorandum urging the establishment of the college.
Majhi had assured them at the time that the demand would be fulfilled.
