Salepur: At least five sheep were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Lunahar village of Chandradeipur panchayat under this block in Cuttack Saturday, sending shock waves among sheep rearers in the district.
The incident came to fore after Rabindra Behera-a farmer to whom the sheep belonged went on to inspect the shed early in the morning. He found the carcasses of the sheep in a pool of blood. Out of the five carcasses, head portions of two were found missing while the rest were found with their stomach and intestines torn apart.
Local people alleged it to be the work of a mysterious animal and grew apprehensive after they found pug marks near the shed.
On getting the information, forest officials along with a veterinary team reached the spot and launched a probe. Veterinary officer Bibekananda Sahu collected some portions of vital organs from the carcasses before sending them for autopsy. Admitting the role of a mysterious animal behind the incident, Sahu said the post-mortem report would throw more light on it.
The ‘mysterious animal’ had allegedly killed over 250 sheep in Niali region between March and July last year.
