Balasore, May 11: Many people are not able to utilise their talents to their full potential as they are not yet accustomed to modern technologies and gadgets, Governor of Orissa and Chancellor SC Jamir said Monday during the seventh convocation of Fakir Mohan University here.
These people should be provided training about new technologies as it will help in ensuring the growth of the country, he said.
Jamir rued the fact that none of the Indian universities features among 100 best universities of the world despite having one of the largest educational facilities in the world.
“We have to find out existing loopholes in our system soon and focus on the growth of technical education in the country,” the Governor said.
“I am proud of attending the convocation ceremony of a university which is named after a great litterateur like Fakir Mohan,” he added.
Chief guest S Ayappan, secretary of agricultural research and education department, Government of India, emphasised on the necessity of advanced studies and research in the field of agriculture.
Vice-chancellor Shiv Prasad Adhikari presided over the programme and spoke about facilities and achievements of the university.
Noted musician Shantanu Mohapatra and historian Nibedita Mohanty were conferred D Lit on this occasion. Besides, 42 students of the university were also awarded D Lit and PhD and 23 others honoured with gold medals. Among others, Governor’s wife Alema Jamir, registrar MC Adhikari, collector Sanatan Mallik, superintendent of police Abinash Kumar and other top government officials were present on the occasion.
Protest over venue
Meanwhile, members of several organisations Monday staged a demonstration at Fakirmohan Golei here protesting against the organization of the seventh convocation ceremony of Fakir Mohan University at a rented venue (NOCCI business park) instead of the premises of the university.
While six earlier convocations were held on the premises of the university, organisation of seventh outside the campus has demeaned the glory of the institution, the protesters said.They sought a clarification from vice-chancellor of the university and warned against such act in future.
Manoj Kumar Nayak and Antaryami Pradhan of Balasore civil society, Laxmidhar Behera, Baidyanath Sarangi of Senior Citizen’s Forum, Sharat Chandra Das of Balasore Education Foundation and many others took part in the demonstration.
