Balasore: Crime Branch police Monday arrested former IIC Tariq Ahmed in connection with the self-immolation of two brothers Sheikh Sabir and Sheikh Sadiq.
Tariq was arrested from Khurda and produced in the SDJM court. He was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
According to sources, the incident had occurred in November 2012 when Ahmed was posted at Balasore Town police station after being suspended from the IIC post in Titilagarh police station following the death of a jail inmate.
Sabir had lodged a complaint against a chit fund company ‘Mimi India’ alleging the firm of duping him. As no action was taken over his complaint, Sabir, at a press meet, accused the police of being hand-in-glove with the company.
Police then arrested Sabir, Sadiq and their father Sheikh Gafur over a complaint lodged by the chit fund company. They were later released on bail. Sabir then wrote a letter to the director general of police alleging that the police arrested him and his family members out of vengeance.
Tariq along with a team went to Sabir’s house to arrest them. However, Sabir and Sadiq immolated themselves when Tariq tried to break open the door.
Police rescued the brothers in a critical condition and admitted them to the district headquarters hospital. They were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital where they died.
Police registered a case against Tariq based on a complaint lodged by Gafur, who filed a petition in high court demanding Crime Branch investigation into the matter. The Crime Branch probed the matter acting on the court order. PNN
