Bhubaneswar: DGP RP Sharma Wednesday suspended Jagannath Acharya, an inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Laxmipur police station in Koraput district on grounds of ‘suspicious and lackadaisical attitude’ in investigating a ganja smuggling case.
According to the order issued by the state police headquarters, Acharya was negligent and distrustful in dealing with an important narcotics’ (NDPS) case which was registered with Laxmipur police July 12.
During the period of suspension, Acharya would remain under the disciplinary control of south western range (SWR) DIG.
Sharma has also instructed Koraput SP to immediately submit the necessary draft charge and memo of evidence along with relevant documents against the IIC for drawl of disciplinary proceedings against him.
According to reports, on the intervening night of July 11 and 12, Laxmipur police detained a truck which was suspected to be carrying ganja. However, due to “suspected and deliberate negligence” of the IIC, the driver could manage to escape.
Besides, the IIC did not report the matter to SDPO or SP of Koraput. After an enquiry the SP submitted a report to DGP through DIG, SWR. “As prima facie evidence was established and a departmental proceeding is being contemplated, Acharya was placed under suspension,” a statement issued by the police headquarters noted.
