Birajakhetra: Two siblings displayed exemplary courage and rescued a girl who had jumped into the overflowing Kharasrota River to commit suicide on Jajpur-Baruan Road Monday.
The siblings are Alekh Rout, (30), and Ajit Rout, (24), of Badabant village. Sadar IIC Manoranjan Das rushed to the spot and admitted the rescued girl Anupama Sahu, the daughter of Kartik Sahu of Erabanka village and a student of Plus Three at Sujanpur College.
Das admitted the girl to the district headquarters hospital where her condition improved. Locals hailed the siblings and demanded that the district administration should felicitate them during Independence Day.
A handwritten note and the mobile phone of Anupama were recovered by police from the river’s bridge. However, the reason for the suicide attempt is not known.
Sources said Anupama left home for college without taking her bicycle and came to the bridge on the Jajpur-Baruan Road. She jumped into the river which was in spate due to heavy rains over the last three days.
Alekh and Ajit wre passing by and saw Anupama attempting suicide and jumped after her. The siblings rescued her and brought her to the bank.
