Balugaon: Close on the heels of a girl’s rape and her subsequent suicide after a one-sided love affair in the Banpur region, a minor girl who was stabbed by a youth after another one-sided love affair here in Khurda district, died while undergoing treatment at the Berhampur MKCG Medical College and Hospital late Saturday night.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and locals placed the body of the girl at Gandhi Square and staged a road blockade demanding justice for the victim, compensation for her family and capital punishment for the accused.
Khurda SP Deepti Ranjan Ray, Balugaon SDPO Subhash Chandra Panda, Balugaon IIC Sanjay Pattnaik and his Tangi and Banpur counterparts rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the people.
The protestors relented after Chilika’s additional tehsildar Prithwiraj Mandal gave Rs 10,000 from the district Red Cross fund for the cremation of the victim and promised action against the killer.
Meanwhile, the police arrested the accused, R. Gopi, (24), of Annapurna Nagar here and recovered a pair of blood stained dress and a knife from him. The accused admitted the crime during interrogation. A case was registered and the accused will be produced in court Monday, police said.
Police said that Gopi was in love with the girl of the same area who was working in a beauty parlour. The victim after finishing her duty was returning home at 8.30 pm Saturday. The area was dark due to load shedding and Gopi hid near a deserted place and waited for the girl.
He caught the girl and declared his love for her as the girl arrived. Gopi flew into a rage and attacked her with a knife after she turned down his request. The girl was injured seriously in the chest, back, stomach and limbs in the attack. PNN
