New Delhi: Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse and no “mysterious” person was involved in his death, senior lawyer and former Additional Solicitor General Amrendra Sharan told the Supreme Court of India Monday.
Sharan, who was appointed by the apex court to examine documents related to Gandhi’s assassination, stated in his report, “The ideology, the assassin and the bullets that pierced Gandhi, and the weapon have been identified. There is no scope for any further probe.”
Last year, a petitioner, Pankaj Phadnis, had claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was killed by a second assassin, who had fired a “fourth bullet”. The court had asked Saran to assist in deciding the case after the petitioner claimed he possessed documentary evidence to prove that the real killer of Gandhi was never caught, leave alone tried in the court of law.
However, Sharan’s report ruled out existence of the “mysterious person”. According to Sharan, a fourth bullet was recovered in Gwalior, and it didn’t match Nathuram Godse’s pistol.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, who was hanged along with two others for the crime. The Supreme Court had said Monday that nothing new can be achieved from a fresh investigation into the seven-decade-old case.
Petitioner Pankaj Phadnis, founder of ‘Abhinav Bharat’, is a self-proclaimed follower of Veer Savarkar. He moved the Supreme Court after his petition was rejected by the Bombay high court.
