Bhubaneswar, March 16: The state government increased the intake capacity of both graduate and post graduate technical institutions and introduced new courses for the academic session 2015-16. As many as 1,173 seats were added to the existing numbers in these institutions.
As per a notification issued by the employment, technical education and training (ETE&T) department, 550 seats were increased in B Tech courses while 545 were added to M Tech seats. Similarly, 18 and 60 seats were set for the newly introduced B Plan and M Plan courses respectively.
The additions have been made in six government-run institutes and they are: Veer Surendra Sai University of Technical Education, Burla, College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar, Parala Maharaja Engineering College, Berhampur, Government College of Engineering (GCE), Kenojhar and Government College of Engineering (GCE), Kalahandi and Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) Sarang. At present, these institutes have together 3,350 B Tech seats and 510 M Tech seats. At presently, as many 3350 seats are there in B Tech courses and 510 in M Tech. Last year the government increased the number of seats by 1,408 in two courses.
“In view of the demand for seats in government colleges, we have taken the decision. It will help the poor and meritorious students, who are otherwise deprived of quality technical education in the state,” ETET additional secretary PK Das said.
It may be noted here that a few days back, ETET secretary CS Kumar wrote a letter to All India Council for Technical Education seeking approval for raising the intake capacity and introduction of new courses in the colleges.
