GRP constable ends life in Rourkela

Rourkela: A Government Railway Police (GRP) constable posted at the office of the Rourkela Railway Superintendent of Police died by hanging Sunday night at his residence in Basanti Colony here, officials said Monday.

The deceased was identified as Sheikh Ahmad Hussain, 48. He lived with his wife, Namita Mahtab. According to police, Namita was sleeping in another room at the time of the incident.

When she tried to wake her husband by knocking on the door, she received no response.

After repeated attempts, she alerted neighbours, who helped break open the door.

Inside, Hussain was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a scarf. Local police were immediately informed.

Udit Nagar police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, conducted an inquest and sent it to the Rourkela Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The couple’s daughter works in Bangalore.

Both husband and wife were employed at the SSP office, police said. The reason behind the suicide remains unclear.

Police have registered a case.
