Bhubaneswar/ Sambalpur: Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Saturday urged graduating students of IIM-Sambalpur to become job creators rather than job seekers, highlighting the expanding opportunities in entrepreneurship and innovation in India.

He was addressing the 10th convocation held at the Konark Auditorium of the premier B-school in Sambalpur. The Governor highlighted the country’s “unprecedented startup revolution,” driven by flagship initiatives such as Startup India, Digital India, Make in India and Skill India.

He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is steadily emerging as a global hub for startups, technology and innovation, backed by a robust ecosystem of funding, mentorship and policy support. Expressing appreciation for the institute, he described IIM-Sambalpur as a symbol of innovation, inclusiveness and academic excellence, blending cultural heritage with modern, technology-driven learning.

He congratulated graduates of MBA, Executive MBA, MBA for Working Professionals and doctoral programmes, while also acknowledging the contributions of faculty members and parents. Stating that a convocation marks both achievement and responsibility, he urged students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges with integrity and purpose.

Highlighting the importance of adaptability, he cited the example of Nokia, which lost market dominance due to its inability to keep pace with technological change. He also referred to Parag Agrawal, highlighting his resilience after being removed from leadership at Twitter (now X) and his efforts to rebuild through new ventures.

Such examples, he said, show that setbacks can be turned into opportunities for reinvention and growth. The Governor underlined Odisha’s emergence as a hub for industrial growth and entrepreneurship, with strong prospects in manufacturing, mining, textiles, IT and renewable energy. He encouraged students to contribute to the state’s development by leveraging these opportunities.

Pointing to evolving trends such as artificial intelligence, hybrid work models, sustainability and ethical governance, he stressed the importance of empathy, adaptability and emotional intelligence in leadership. He also urged the institute to further strengthen its startup ecosystem and promote innovation.

“True success lies not only in professional achievements but in the values you uphold and the impact you create,” he said, encouraging graduates to remain lifelong learners and responsible leaders committed to societal progress. On the occasion, the convocation address was delivered by Vice-President and Managing Director of Adobe India Prativa Mohapatra.

The Director’s Report was presented by IIM-Sambalpur Director Mahadeo Prasad Jaiswal, while Chairperson-in-Charge of the Board of Governors, Chandan Chowdhury, delivered the welcome address.
