BHUBANESWAR: A halfmarathon was organised in the city Sunday as part of the BSF’s countrywide initiative to honour the martyrs and demonstrate a deep sense of gratitude among the citizens to the brave souls. The marathon was organised by the Border Security Force (BSF) in memory of those who have laid down their lives for the nation’s security. The initiative by the BSF was praiseworthy, said DGP Orissa Police RP Sharma. Several men, women and children participated in the Under 21km, 10km and 5km categories respectively. Altogether, the participants numbered 1,400. The marathon was flagged off by petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the Kalinga Stadium. Orissa’s Director General of Police (DGP) RP Sharma also said the participation of a large number of people in this mini-marathon showed the bent of mind of the people at large to pay homage and tributes to the martyrs. “BSF has
played an important role in curbing the Maoists menace, especially in Orissa. People participating in such a large number in this event showed the respect they have for policemen,” Sharma said. “We organised the marathon to pay homage to the martyrs. We will organise the event every year,” said BSF inspector general AK Singh. “By organising competitions such as the Asian Athletic Championship, the interest among the people for sports in Bhubaneswar has increased. The BSF has taken a unique initiative in this direction by organising the half marathon today,” said Anand Panda, a participant. “While several marathons have been held in the state in recent times, this marathon stood out. It is very encouraging that even children and differently-abled and women are taking part in the run and demonstrating a spirit of patriotism. It also demonstrates our respect to the police and paramilitary forces,” said Saswat Mohanty.
In another programme, family members of three martyrs were felicitated by the Utkal Royal Society near State Museum. The martyrs were Sibasis Panda, Krishnama Raju and Pratap Kumar Sahoo. The families were felicitated by state minister Surya Narayan Patro.
