Cuttack, July 20: The Orissa High Court here Wednesday quashed the dowry torture case filed by Barsa Swony Choudhury, daughter-in-law of former law minister Raghunath Mohanty.
The High Court quashed the case on the basis of a settlement reached between Barsa and her husband-Rajashree Mohanty.
The couple had submitted affidavits to the court in this regard. They had petitioned the High Court that they had reached a compromise and reunited, hence there was no need to continue with the case.
The High Court’s order is a formal requirement for quashing of the case which is pending in a lower court at Balasore.
Notably, the estranged couple, Rajashree and Barsa Swony, had announced May 25 their reconciliation before the media at Bhubaneswar. The reunion was facilitated by Barsa Swony Foundation.
Barsa had filed a dowry case against husband Rajashree and his family members in 2013 alleging her in-laws had demanded Rs 25 lakh and a vehicle as dowry from her parents but when they turned down the demand, they started torturing her.
The Crime Branch of Orissa police had arrested Raghunath Mohanty and his wife Pritilata in 2013 from an apartment in Kolkata where they were hiding to escape the police after their daughter-in-law lodged a formal complaint.
