Cuttack: The Orissa High Court Wednesday granted conditional bail to suspended Jailer of Sambalpur circle jail, Sushant Kumar Rout, who was arrested after seizure of unaccounted cash from his office chamber earlier this month.
A single-judge bench of Justice JP Das directed Rout to deposit a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and two guarantors with the court for the bail.
Rout was asked to cooperate with the vigilance in the ongoing investigation, not to intimidate the witness, depose before the investigating officer if need be, not to leave the state without prior permission, not to destroy evidence.
Notably, police had conducted raids at several jails across the state and recovered Rs 18,86,900 from an almirah in Rout’s chamber at Sambalpur jail. Rout failed to give account of the recovered cash and was suspended. Subsequently, the Vigilance took over the case and conducted simultaneous raids at Rout’s government quarters on the jail premises, his office and paternal house at Kalyanpur in Binjharpur police limits of Jajpur district.
The vigilance sleuths had seized crucial documents as well as bank passbooks during the search. A case was registered and Rout was arrested June 9.
Earlier, Rout had moved the special vigilance judge court at Sambalpur for bail. However, his petition was turned down by the court. Later, Rout challenged the ruling in the HC.
