Heavy rain, thunderstorm likely in 16 districts

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Centre (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in the coastal and southern districts of Odisha in the next 48 hours. Most areas of Odisha have received pre-monsoon showers this summer under the influence of the approaching southwest monsoon.

A cyclonic circulation that has formed in the north-west-central area of the Bay of Bengal is most likely to intensify into a low pressure system in the next 48 hours, the IMD said. The temperature in most parts of western Odisha which is at present around 40 degree Celsius, will come down after June 8 due to the advancing monsoon, the release added.

Meanwhile, the IMD also suspected thunderstorm accompanied by gusty surface winds and lightning in likely  16 districts.

The districts are Gajapati, Ganjam, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Puri, Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada.

“Latest doppler weather radar and satellite imageries indicate that a thunderstorm accompanied by gusty surface winds and lightning is likely to occur in (these) districts till 6pm today,” said a bulletin issued by the meteorological centre.

People in these districts are advised to stay indoors or take shelter at safe places during the period, it said.

Under its influence, there can be heavy rainfall in many parts.
