Puri: A dreaded criminal, Jitendra Sahoo alias Jitu, sustained bullet injuries in a police encounter near Barimula Chhak on Pipili-Jatni highway Saturday.
Following the shootout, Jitu was first admitted to Pipili hospital and has later been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Police also seized a pistol, two live bullets and a motorcycle from his possession.
Acting on a tip off about Jitu heading towards Puri from Khurda at 5 am, a joint team comprising Kumbharpada and Pipili police intercepted him near Barimula Chhak following which Jitu opened fire at the policemen.
However, Jitu sustained bullet injuries on his right leg in retaliatory fire.
According to reports many criminal cases are pending against Jitu at several police stations.
He was linked with the notorious criminal Sanjay Behera alias Para murder case that took place December 25 last year near Nakchana entrance of the Gundicha temple here.
Notably, the prime accused in Para murder case Muna Parida has surrendered before a local court in Nimapada recently.
