Tikiri: Even as increasing school dropouts have become a headache for the government, a housewife has impressed one and all by launching a campaign against it.
Laxmi Gauda, a Plus II pass out, of Gaudasahi near Kashipur block headquarters town in Rayagada district has started teaching school dropouts on her narrow verandah twice a day so that they can be readmitted into the classes with their confidence running high.
“I realised that children of Gaudasahi are lagging behind in their studies after they stopped attending their classes. This made me give them lessons on my verandah in the morning and evening to improve their standard,” Laxmi said, adding, the kids who were studying in Class V failed to solve the problems of even Class I.
She has been trying to convince parents, who engage their children in tending cattle, to send them to schools.
She easily gets time to teach the children after completing her household chores and most importantly she enjoys the job, admitted Laxmi.
“There is a lot of improvement in their standard after their stint with me” boasted Laxmi.
It was alleged that quality education continues to remain out of bounds for the poor despite the government spending crores of rupees through schemes like Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan, a programme to universalise elementary education.
However, the education department, impressed by Laxmi’s campaign, recently offered her a black board and other study materials so that she can continue the classes.
While locals appreciated the noble move of a housewife, Madan Gouda, a co-villager, demanded that the administration meet all her requirements.
