New Delhi: A Group Captain, posted at the IAF’s headquarters here, has been taken into custody by IAF for alleged involvement in espionage and attempt to access sensitive documents, official sources said Wednesday.
The investigators are trying to find out whether the officer is the victim of a honey trap.
The officer was found engaged in certain “unauthorised activities” using banned electronic devices against existing orders, the sources said.
Apparently, he was in touch with a woman through social media whose identity has not yet been established.
A team of the IAF’s central security and investigation took the officer into custody, and he is being interrogated, said the sources.
The “unauthorised” activities by the officer were discovered during routine counter intelligence surveillance, the sources said, adding he attempted to access sensitive documents.
The Indian Air Force authorities did not comment on the
matter.
The identity of the officer is being kept secret as investigation into the case was going on, the sources said.
The investigators are also examining whether the officer has passed on any sensitive information to anyone.
The services have a strict code on engaging on social media, which restricts soldiers from sharing their identity, rank, posting and other professional details.
The restrictions include posting pictures in uniform and details about place of posting, weapons and armaments.
In December 2015, a dismissed IAF official was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly passing on information to intelligence agents of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
