Bhubaneswar: A 34-year-old woman, who was working as a researcher at the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) here, hanged herself to death at her rented accommodation in Bhagwat Sandhan area under Mancheswar police limits.
Police said the deceased, who has been identified as Subhalaxmi Acharya, was not staying with her husband for the last two years.
“The couple has an eight-year-old son,” Mancheswar police station inspector-in-charge Himanshu Bhusan Swain told Orissa POST.
“Preliminary investigation says Subhalaxmi, a native of Tirtol in Jagatsinghpur district, committed suicide at her rented accommodation in Bhagwat Sandhan Phase-II (Plot No. 8) over a personal dispute. We have sent her body for an autopsy and are investigating the matter,” he said.
Police said Subhalaxmi had sent her son to her father’s house before taking the extreme step.
Sources said Subhalaxmi was into an illicit relationship and reportedly made a video call to her paramour before hanging herself in the intervening night of February 9 and 10. The sources also added that she was perhaps upset after her male friend denied coming to the city on Valentine’s Day.
Meanwhile, the police have registered a case of unnatural death in this regard. PNN
