Insane man ends life after killing two

Pottangi: In a gruesome incident, an insane man Friday morning killed his minor daughter, along with his mother-in-law, using a barisi (a carpentry tool) and later ended his life by slitting his throat in Siura village under this police limits in Koraput district.

The deceased were identified as Pangi Dikunu, his daughter Pangi Sarita and mother-in-law Mary Indra. A minor daughter of a neighbour is battling for life at the hospital as she too was assaulted by Pangi, but survived.

Pangi had lost his mental stability two years ago but recovered recently after taking medicines from a local quack. However, he was found roaming around in the village for the last two days, shouting at himself which was a clear sign of mental illness, said a villager.

While the incident sent shock waves across the district, police are yet to ascertain the reason behind the incident.

According to reports, Pangi went to a neighbour’s house in the wee hours of Friday searching for  his father in-law Jhudunga (Mary’s husband) to collect medicines. After finding him nowhere, Pangi entered Mary’s house and bolted the door from inside. In a state of insanity, he first assaulted Mary, leaving her dead. Then he went ahead to attack his daughter Sarita and Sindheri Nimai, daughter of a neighbour who was present at that time. Sarita died on the spot while Nimai became unconscious after the assault. Pangi, later, slashed his throat to end his life.

Pangi’s brother Subash Pangi, with the help of other villagers, broke upon the door and found the four lying in a pool of blood. Except Nimai, who was rushed to the district headquarters hospital, the others were found dead.

Alerted, Asp VR Rao, along with a police team including local IIC Dev Kumar Gamang,  reached the village and began a probe. The bodies were sent to Pottangi community health centre for post-mortem.       PNN
