Bhubaneswar, June 19: WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty of Orissa is sharing the joint second spot along with five others with 3.5 points each after the completion of the fourth round of the National Woman Challengers’ chess tournament at Chennai, Sunday.
In her fourth round match, Kiran outwitted Vantika Agarwal of Delhi. Aparajita Gochhikar also returned to winning ways by prevailing over S Vandana Bandodkar of LIC. Krushna Mishra continued her impressive performance and got the better of P Malleswari of Tamil Nadu.
Amiya bags gold
Orissa sprinter Amiya Mallick bagged a gold medal in the 4x100m relay while Dutee Chand secured two silver medals in the 100m and 4x100m relay of the International Open Athletic Meet at Bishkek in Kazakhstan, Saturday. Amiya however, failed to give his best in the 100m due to his injury.
Dutee finished second in the 100m final clocking 11.47 seconds and failed to secure a Rio Olympics berth as the qualifying time was 11.32 seconds. Dutee along with her statemate Srabani Nanda, Jyoti Huriyar Manjunath and Marlin Kuriyan Joseph secured the second position in the 4x100m relay with a timing of 44.45 seconds.
Arm wrestlers feted
The Orissa Arm Wrestling Federation (OAWF) and Utkal Karate School (UKS), Bhubaneswar felicitated the state arm wrestlers at the Utkal Karate School here, Sunday. The state arm wrestlers bagged eight medals, including two gold, four silver and two bronze at the 40th National Arm Wrestling Championships at Nagpur, May 20-24.
Shankar Kahali bagged gold medal in the 60kg category of the junior segment while Rahul Mahar secured the yellow metal in the 80 kg category. Charan Nayak bagged two silver in the 55kg senior and junior segments. Chalan Kumar Behera also secured two silver medals in the 110kg category and in the handicap category. Meanwhile, Gautam Kahali and Somnath Patra bagged bronze medals in the 70kg and 80kg categories respectively.
The OAWF secretary Kedar Sarangi has been elected as the new secretary of the Indian Arm Wrestling Federation (IAF).
