Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police officials have turned a blind eye to the functioning of the Mahila and Sishu desks in the city, if the one at Sahid Nagar police station is any indication.
According to sources, the help desk at Sahid Nagar police station has been gathering dust after the in-charge of the desk was promoted to the rank of inspector and posted at Sambalpur vigilance division.
Mahila and Sishu desks were opened at the police stations across the state with a view to assisting women complainants and victims to reveal details of the cases before male police officers.
Police sources said the basic purpose of setting up of the Mahila and Sishu desks was to give special emphasis on investigation of crimes against women and children, make women more comfortable and protect their privacy.
“Mahila and Sishu desk officials have also been directed to focus on trafficking of women and children in the state. Recently, Sahid Nagar police and quick action team (QAT) officials had busted a sex racket and had rescued four women. One of the women was a native of Murshidabad in West Bengal. But, there were no women officers in the police station who could elicit the details from the rescued women,” they added.
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi told Orissa POST that there is no woman officer in Sahid Nagar police station as of now.
“Some officers were recently promoted from assistant sub-inspector ranks to inspector-level ranks. A couple of women officers have also been posted at Commissionerate Police and one of them will be posted at Sahid Nagar police station soon,” he said.
