Talcher: The Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court here Monday granted bail to industrialist Mahimananda Mishra in the firing incident which occurred at Talcher coal field area in 2011 and rejected the police plea to take him on a seven-day remand.
The High court had granted anticipatory bail to Mishra in 2012 which is in force, sources said. Mishra was brought to Talcher court from Kujanga jail on production orders and was taken back to Kujanga after the court order.
The industrialist who runs coal business here is a suspect in a firing incident that occurred January 11, 2011 at Jagannath colony.
The manager of a private coal transport company Abhaya Ganguly was fired three rounds by an unidentified person while he was on his way to somewhere from his residence. The bullets however missed Ganguly but hit his driver injuring him severely, police said.
Police then on the basis of an FIR lodged by Ganguly registered a case against the manager of Orissa Stevedores Limited and an unnamed accused.
The police are yet to submit chargesheet to the court in this case as there was no progress in the investigations so far.
Earlier, the police had arrested the OSL manager but could neither identify nor trace the assailant who fired the shots.
A similar case is also pending in Motanga police station in Dhenkanal district relating to a violent incident in Bhushan Steel Limited.
Mishra who was arrested last month in connection with the murder of general manager of Seaways and Logistics Limited, Mahendra Swain, is presently lodged in Kujang jail after rejection of his bail application.
The police have meanwhile, opened other pending cases against him, it was learnt. PNN
