Dhenkanal: Police Tuesday arrested a man on charges of rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Kharkhari village under Kankadahad police limits in Dhenkanal district November 12.
The accused has been identified as Shankar Dehuri of Kaliapani village in Jajpur district.
The victim went missing November 12 evening. Her body was found lying in a forest November 13 morning. Some villagers first spotted it and informed the victim’s family. The family members immediately rushed to the spot and identified the body and informed the police.
After receiving information about the incident, SDPO Suprasanna Mallick and Kankadahada police station IIC Asish Kumar Jena along with a team reached the spot and recovered the body for post-mortem.
The family members had alleged that miscreants had stoned their daughter to death after raping her fearing she might disclose their identities.
On the basis of the report lodged by the victim’s family members, the police had registered a case and launched a probe.
