Bhuban: A man was allegedly beaten to death at a village in Dhenkanal district, prompting police to detain three persons including a relative of the victim, in connection with the case.
The incident took place in Bhaju Sahi of Krushnapur village under Bhuban police limits Friday evening. The deceased has been identified as Montu Mahanta, a truck driver.
According to a complaint lodged by his mother, Khadika Mahanta, the victim was allegedly assaulted by Trilochan Mahanta and his family members following a domestic dispute. Police said the accused had called Montu to his house, where he was attacked.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused, along with his wife and son, beat Montu severely, causing multiple injuries. His hands were found fractured, and there were several injury marks on his body and head.
Police also suspect that the accused attempted to dispose of the body by dragging it outside the house and trying to set it on fire. A scientific team visited the spot Saturday and carried out a detailed examination.
Police have registered a case (162/26) and detained three persons for questioning. Trilochan, who was reportedly injured, was initially admitted to Bhuban Community Health Centre and later shifted to Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
The body was sent for a post-mortem and later handed over to the family. Further investigation is underway, police said.
