Patana: A man died while trying to save his differently-abled niece from electrocution at Chinamalipashi Tandia Sahi under Patana block of Keonjhar district Monday morning. The girl and the man’s younger brother also sustained critical injuries.
The deceased was identified as Durjyodhan Behera, 40, son of Rabindra Behera. The injured are Durjyodhan’s niece, Anjali Behera, 11, daughter of Chitrasen Behera, and his younger brother Dushasan Behera, 35.
According to reports, Anjali was drying clothes outside the house by hanging them on a GI wire tied to an asbestos-roofed shed. The wire had somehow come in contact with a live electricity line connected to the house.

When Anjali received an electric shock, her uncle Durjyodhan and the latter’s brother Dushasan rushed to rescue her but were also electrocuted. Durjyodhan sustained severe burn injuries on his belly, while Dushasan suffered burns on his hands. Anjali also suffered grievous injuries. All three were rushed to Patana community health centre (CHC), where doctors declared Durjyodhan dead.
Ghatagaon police reached the CHC, conducted an inquest, and handed the body over to the family after conducting a postmortem. A case (39/25) has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
