Bolangir/Bangomunda: In a gruesome incident, a man hacked his wife to death with an axe over a family feud and then ended his own life by hanging from the ceiling of his house using his ‘lungi’ Sunday night.
The matter came to the fore when the couple did not come out of the house till late on Monday morning. The deceased were identified as Kapurchan Bachha (55) and his wife Kaikeyi Bachha (50).
Suspecting foul play, villagers knocked the door of their room, but found it locked from inside. Consequently, they broke open the door to find the woman lying in a pool of blood. Right next to the body was the man’s hanging body.
The bone-chilling incident was reported from Colonypada of Bhalumunda village under Bangomunda police station in Bolangir district. While the precise reason for the killing and suicide is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the murder is a fall-out of a trivial domestic feud between the couple.
According to reports, the couple eked out a living by doing odd jobs. While Kapurchan did agricultural jobs and also worked as daily wager to make both ends meet, Kaikeyi helped him in his work. Their only son Subash Bachha and his wife Sulata Bachha lived separately.
Kaikeyi had gone to her mother’s house after a dispute with Kapurchan. Two days back, Kapurchan had brought her back to his house after resolving their differences.
It is suspected that the couple fought over the same issue late Sunday night. An enraged Kuparchand picked up an axe and hacked Kaikeyi to death. When his anger cooled down, a sense of guilt supposedly engulfed him and he subsequently hanged himself using his ‘lungi’.
Based on a complaint by Rajaram Bachha, a nephew of the deceased, police registered a case and sent the bodies for autopsy. The bodies will be handed over to their son after post-mortem, police said.
Kantabanji SDPO Prafulla Mishra along with Bangomunda IIC Bhanu Shankar Yadav and other police officials reached the village and took stock of the situation.
