Rayagada, May 11: Pronouncing its verdict in a murder case of 2011, a local court Monday awarded life imprisonment to a person.
District and sessions court judge Md Ajmal also awarded two years of additional jail term to the convict Dhaneswar Kaushalya for destroying evidence.
According to the prosecution, Kadraka Lakamu of Mutukuni under Kalyansinghpur police limits had gone to Sulipadar September 7, 2011 to buy fertilizer. The next day, some villagers spotted blood stains at a place along Mutukuni-Talaramba road. On searching the place, they spotted a body buried a few metre away from the road. Kalyansinghpur police then exhumed the body which was identified as that of Lakamu.
Lakamu’s brother lodged a complaint in this regard with the police on the basis of which a case under Sections 201 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered.
A week after the incident, police detained Dhaneswar of the same village in connection with the case. During interrogation, Dhaneswar confessed to his crime. He told the police that he had hacked Lakamu to death with an axe and then buried the body with the help of Lakna Kaushalya.
The police, however, could not arrest Lakna as he was on the run. Police had filed a chargesheet against Dhaneswar for his involvement in the case. The trial of the case was conducted in the district and sessions judge court. Taking all the evidence and statements recorded by 20 witnesses into consideration, the court convicted Dhaneswar and awarded the punishment.
