Khurda: A suspected family feud took a tragic turn Monday when a 24-year-old youth was shot dead by his step elder brother at Totapada Square here.
Town police said the 40-year-old Mohammad Sekhawat alias Kala had shot his step younger brother Mohammad Sabir, a resident of Deula Tangi under Sadar police limits here, over a family dispute.
“On the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother Mohammad Gora, we have registered a case (431/17) under Sections 302, 25 and 26 of IPC. We suspect the incident is a fallout of past enmity. The accused is on the run after the incident. Efforts are on to nab him,” town inspector in-charge (IIC) Ranjit Sahoo told the media. The IIC added that they have recovered an iron rod from the crime scene.
According to eye witnesses, the incident occurred around 3 pm when Sabir, who owns a betel shop at Totapada Square, was at the shop. Sekhawat and one of his friends reached the spot on a bike and had an altercation with Sabir.
In a fit of rage, an enraged Sekhawat opened fire on the victim and fled the scene. Sabir collapsed on the spot, they said.
His family rushed him to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where doctors declared him brought dead. Police reached the DHH and handed over Sabir’s body to his family after autopsy.
