Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch has arrested a person named Sarbeswar Sahoo for allegedly defrauding a nationalised bank of `3 lakh. Sahoo is a resident of Kalinga Vihar in Puri district.
Pranab Kumar Ray, senior manager at the Nayasarak Branch of Allahabad Bank in Cuttack, registered a complaint with the police regarding a loan scam at his branch.
According to the complaint, around 85 persons took loans worth `2.26 crore from the bank under the ‘Sarala Loan’ scheme from December 2009 to March 2010.
The debtors forged documents in collusion with one Rabindra Kumar Jena, the establishment officer in the office of Chief Engineer, drainage at Gandarpur of Cuttack district.
Investigations found that Sahoo had availed `3 lakh as loan from the bank by impersonating himself as junior engineer, drainage division, Gandarpur.
22 accused persons in the case have been sent to court and out of them 20 are out on bail. On October 5, 2012, EOW registered a case (01/12) under sections 419, 420, 468, 4781 and 34 of IPC.
The chief accused, Rabindra Kumar Jena, was convicted by the JFMC court in a fraud case.
