Angul: In a suicide pact, a man and his sister-in-law ended their lives by consumed pesticide at Gopabandhu Park here Monday after their family members disapproved of their illicit relationship.
The deceased were identified as Ramakant Dehuri (34) of Jagannathpur under Purunakote police limits and Kamini Dehuri (22) of Ogi under Jarpada police limits.
The matter came to fore after watchman Achyutananda Nayak found them lying unconscious and frothing at the mouth.
Police with the help of fire brigade personnel admitted the duo to the district headquarters hospital where Kamini died a few minutes later. Ramakant died while being taken to a Cuttack hospital after the arrival of his family members.
Police registered a case of unnatural death and seized a bottle of pesticide, a vermillion packet and a pair of bangles from the spot.
Police said Ramakant, who worked in Talacher, was happily married to Kuni for 16 years and was a father of two children. Enter Kamini, Kuni’s younger sister, and everything changes in the couple’s lives.
Ramakant developed an illicit affair with Kamini a year ago despite strong objections from Kuni and other family members, the police said.
This resulted in frequent fights between the couple but Ramakant continued to meet Kamini and started meeting her clandestinely.
Recently, Kamini visited her elder sister but left Sunday evening saying she would go back to Ogi.
As per a plan, Ramakant and Kamini met in the park Monday morning. It is assumed Ramakant applied vermillion on her forehead and gave her a pair of red coloured bangles before the duo took the extreme step.
Kuni admitted to the illicit relationship between her husband and sister. She claimed she was ready to accept her sister as her husband’s second wife but had no idea that the duo would take the extreme step. PNN
