Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a man threw acid on his own family members while they were asleep, causing minor burn injuries to his four children, two wives and his old father, at Bhirkuti in Mancheswar area early Thursday morning.
The man, identified as Sura Behera (35), a native of Tigiria in Athagarh subdivision of Cuttack district, was arrested by Saheed Nagar police and charged under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (a) (throwing acid) of IPC.
Police sources said even as Behera, a tractor driver, had two wives who lived together at his house, he was having an extramarital affair with another woman in the locality. His family had lately seen several quarrels and frequent bickering allegedly due to his generosity towards the third woman.
Behera had allegedly been spending all his income on the third woman, forcing his two wives and his four children to live in extreme poverty. Frustrated by the constant objections raised by his two wives to his ongoing affair with the third woman, Behera allegedly brought some acid home Wednesday night and threw it indiscriminately on all his family members sleeping in the house early in the morning.
Behera’s four children – two sons and two daughters, all aged below five years – and his father, Banamali Behera, sustained minor burn injuries in their arms and legs while his two wives had similar injuries in their faces, said police.
They received treatment for their injuries at Capital Hospital and were discharged immediately afterwards.
Behera was produced in court. The third woman in his life is said to be 28 years old. “An investigation is on, and efforts are on to find out the details about this case,” said a police official engaged in the investigation.
