Bhubaneswar, June 18: Saila Ranasingh, the alleged mastermind of the incident in which a police team was beaten up by slum dwellers In Haldipadia June 8, and her family were arrested Thursday from Soro in Balasore, where they were staying in disguise as melody artistes.
Those arrested include, apart from the 43-year-old Ranasingh, her daughter Puja Ranasingh alias Pinky, 23, son Jitu alias Tutu Ranasingh, 25, all natives of Ranpur in Nayagarh district, son-in-law Karana Pujapanda, 30, a native of Puri and a juvenile.
With this, a total of eight accused out of the 12 named in the case have been arrested and produced in court. Police commissioner RP Sharma said Ranasingh has been booked under eight different cases of rioting, criminal intimidation, obscene act, voluntarily causing hurt, causing mischief and wrongful restraint and confinement. The first case against Ranasingh was registered at Laxmisagar police station in 2006 for intimidation and trespass.
Three cases of wrongful restraint, causing hurt and criminal intimidation have also been registered at Laxmisagar police station against her daughter. Jitu also has two cases pending against him at the same police station.
Sharma said it was their criminal character that prompted them to turn against the police June 8.
