Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the designation of Paradip Port as a ‘Mega Port’ under the Indian Ports Act, 2025 marks a significant recognition of the state’s growing strength in India’s maritime economy.
With the new status, Paradip Port has become the only Mega Port on India’s eastern coast, reaffirming its strategic importance as a major gateway for trade, industry and connectivity, Majhi said.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the recognition reflected Paradip Port’s expanding capacity, robust infrastructure and operational strength. He said the new status would further strengthen Odisha’s potential to attract investment, enhance logistics and create new economic opportunities for the people of the state.
“As Odisha moves towards becoming a leading hub for trade, industry and maritime growth, Paradip Port will play an increasingly important role in powering the state’s economic transformation and contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat,” Majhi said.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the recognition accorded to Paradip Port. “This is a proud moment for every Odia and a new milestone in Odisha’s journey of progress,” the Chief Minister said.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Friday issued a notification declaring four ports as ‘Mega Ports’ after an assessment of prescribed benchmarks. Along with Paradip Port, three other ports – Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) and Mundra Port, the only non-major port in the category, have been awarded the status.
Paradip Port handles large volumes of coal, iron ore, fertilisers, crude oil and other bulk cargo, serving as a critical logistics hub for eastern and central India.
