Monsoon becomes active, to cover entire state by Tuesday

Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon that had weakened after its arrival in the state June 8 has become active again and is likely to cover the entire state by Tuesday, the weather office here said Monday.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall might lash the northern parts of the state Monday due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southwest and Northwest Bay of Bengal.

Rainfall in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar has brought the much-needed respite from the scorching heat. The coastal parts of the state including Paradip, Balasore and Puri also experienced heavy rainfall.

While Paradip recorded the highest rainfall of 60 mm, Puri received 26 mm rainfall since Sunday. With the revival of Monsoon, the weatherman is expecting rainfall in interior as well as western parts of the state.

The weather office has warned of strong and gusty surface winds upto 35 to 45 km per hour along and off the Odisha coast and advised caution to fishermen in the sea.n

In a rain-related incident, a woman and her young daughter died of  lightning while a minor boy and another woman were rendered critical when they were out fishing in Mahakhalpara area of Kendrapara district.

Met officials have advised people to remain indoors as there was a high risk of lightning triggered by Monsoon weather formations in various parts of the state.
