Jaleswar, Feb 22: In response to the letter of additional chief secretary Dr Taradatt, DGP Sanjib Marik sent one more police platoon to Raibania area of Jaleswar Sunday to help the administration conduct raids on the sand mafia from West Bengal.
The sand mafia from the neighbouring state have been carrying out their illegal activities in Subarnareka river at Praharajpur and peripheral areas. Dr Taradatt had felt the need for more forces to counter such activities.
He had written a letter to DGP Sanjib Marik in this regard. As the borders of Orissa with West Bengal have not been demarcated, sand mafia from the neighbouring state have been rampantly quarrying sand. Massive sand lifting from river bed has changed the course of Subarnarekha, posing danger to several riparian villages.
The locals had raised the issue with the
government several times. The administration raided some parts February 14, but had to
abandon the crackdown halfway due to
shortage of forces.
The issue came up for discussion in the Assembly, following which Dr Taradatt had sought a detailed report about the issue from Balasore collector Sanatan Mallick.
On the basis of this report, the additional chief secretary has sought more police force from the DGP to take stern action against the sand mafia of West Bengal.
