Bhubaneswar: A multiple-disability rehabilitation facility meant for physically challenged people suffering from more than one form of disability is all set to be established on a 10-acre plot at Jatni in the next one year.
The facility, Composite Rehabilitation Centre (CRC), has been planned by National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), which works under the aegis of the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment. Currently headquartered at Chennai, NIEPDM has already started operations of CRC in Bhubaneswar for the benefit of the targeted sections.
The state government has sanctioned NIEPMD ten acres of land in Jatni to set up CRC, though the organisation had asked for 25 acres. CRC will help people suffering from multiple disabilities through early intervention, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration, special education, vocation guidance, prosthetic and orthotic services and mobile services, besides creating public awareness. The specialised centre would also work towards development of human resource for management, training, rehabilitation, education, employment and social development of people with disabilities.
CRS, which started functioning temporarily on the campus of Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for the Handicapped (VRCH), Gandamunda, December 16 last, has begun imparting training on participants in horticulture and agriculture, besides providing them therapy by experts. NIEPMD had signed an MoU with VRCH for using a part of the VRCH campus for CRS till it gets a permanent building in Jatni.
“CRS will greatly help people suffering from multiple disabilities. It also offers hope for autism and other diseases like leprosy,” said Ram Kishor Sharma, assistant director of VRCH.
Neerida Chandramohan, associate professor of NIEPMD, has been made the nodal officer for the Bhubaneswar CRC. CRS still awaits a formal inauguration, which is likely to take place this month, said sources.
